Safety & Environmental Engineer

REPORTS TO: The Vice President; secondary reporting responsibilities to Company Ownership Group. 

STATUS: Exempt

SUMMARY: The Safety & Environmental Engineer works with the Vice President of Operations, and all project teams in support of the Corporate Safety, Health, and Environmental program requirements. This individual ensures compliance with all municipal, state,and federal safety regulations and oversees/leads, directs, and enforces safety, health, and environmental requirements on all company construction projects. 

KEY INTERFACES: Company Management and Craft Employees

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement all aspects of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) investigations, data analysis, recurrence prevention programs, and continuous improvement procedures
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local requirements governing environmental protection and occupational safety and health standards by staying current and informed on federal, state, and local rules and regulations
  • Develops (and maintains current) the Company Accident Prevention Program (APP)
  • Leads and/or assists in overall program improvement, implementation and expansion as directed
  • Maintains safety data, analytics, and training records
  • Educates project staff on company Construction Safety policies and procedures
  • Conducts training on company safety and health programs as well as general construction safety topics as necessary to ensure project staff can recognize existing hazards 
  • Directly supports delivery of all EHS training for all levels of employees
  • Provide technical assistance and site support for all EHS programs
  • Aids in Hazard Recognition and Job Safety Analysis
  • Provides safety and health leadership on the project. Builds working relationships with project staff and Subcontractors to develop fully-compliant project
  • Enforces safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all municipal, state and federal regulations. Ensures compliance with company safety and health program requirements and project specific Safety and Health Plan
  • Recommends corrective action(s) for non-compliant conditions based on company policies and applicable safety and health regulations
  • Communicates with project staff and subcontractors in connection with resolving project safety and health issues
  • Respond and provide guidance and assistance for any/all emergency situations
  • Ensures that project specific safety and health inspections are performed and documented for all work in progress. This includes safety and health inspections required by municipal regulations
  • Maintain fleet safety program, DOT compliance, FMSCA reporting, and the investigation of accidents involving fleet equipment and estimation of repair costs
  • Communicates and works with various third parties, including commercial insurance brokers and providers
  • Reviews contractor safety and health submittals and provides recommendations to improve contractor's written safety and health documents

Essential Job Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS: 

  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety and health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions
  • Demonstrates management, leadership, and interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to communicate clearly (both verbally and in writing) to others
  • Possesses working knowledge of OSHA and/or LNI Construction Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards, as well as, municipal and state regulations governing construction project safety and health. 
  • Have the ability to communicate in a clear, and concise manner
  • Able to demonstrate problem solving and teamwork skills
  • Good organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Self-motivated and committed to the importance of a people based health and safety program
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint. Able to perform internet inquiries, email, and navigate regulatory websites
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License

PREFERRED SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience and proficiency in Viewpoint, HCSS Heavy Job and Safety Pro
  • Competent Person Training - Trench/Excavation, Fall Protection, Scaffolding
  • HAZWOPER - 29 CFR 1910.120 with annual refresher
  • Fed-OSHA 30-hour Construction Outreach or OSHA 500
  • CPR/First Aid training as prescribed
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • CHST Certification
  • Bilingual, ability to speak Spanish

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Must have a degree in Safety Management, Engineering or Construction Management, industrial hygiene and/or a minimum of three (3) years of progressive construction safety experience
  • Demonstrate a knowledge-base of LNI, OSHA, DOSH, and NFPA Standards
  • Experience in maintaining OSHA 300 logs, incident rates, and prepare PowerPoint training and safety meetings

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To successfully perform the essential duties of this position, an individual must be able to sit at a desk for four or more hours per day, and occasionally lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds. Individuals must be able to access all points of a construction site in a wide range of work environments.
